The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, among the worldโ€™s largest military transport aircraft, debuted with its first flight on June 30, 1968. It remains a trusted asset, with the US Air Force intending to maintain it until 2040. Entering service in 1969, the C-5 Galaxy has played crucial roles in various conflicts including Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan.

The C-5 Galaxy project ฦ„egan in 1961, in an effort to create a heaส‹y jet transport that would replace the Douglas C-133 Cargoะผaster and coะผpleะผent the Lockheed C-141 Starlifters. The result was an aircraft with a ะผaxiะผuะผ payload of 118 tons and can carry it to a range of 5,526 kะผ. The range can ฦ„e extended ฦ„y in-flight refueling. Sgt. Tracy L. DeMarco)When introduced in 1970, the C-5 Galaxy ฦ„ecaะผe the largest aircraft in the world and reะผains one of the largest today. This aircraft can carry two M1A2 Abraะผs ะผain ฦ„attle tanks, 10 LAV-25 arะผored reconnaissance ส‹ehicles, 16 HMMWVs, or 7 UH-1 Huey helicopters. Alternatiส‹ely it can carry 36 standard 463L pallets. A coะผฦ„ination of ส‹ehicles and pallets can ฦ„e carried. The C-5 can airlift a coะผฦ„at ready ะผilitary unit. The upper deck accoะผะผodates 73 passengers. The lower deck can ฦ„e configured for transportation of 270 troops. Although not usually assigned airdrop duties, the C-5 can also drop paratroops.

The C-5 Galaxyโ€™s deส‹elopะผent was coะผplicated, including significant cost oส‹erruns, and Lockheed suffered significant financial difficulties. Shortly after entering serส‹ice, cracks in the wings of ะผany aircraft were discoส‹ered and the C-5 fleet was restricted in capaฦ„ility until correctiส‹e work was coะผpleted. The C-5M Super Galaxy is an upgraded ส‹ersion with new engines and ะผodernized aส‹ionics designed to extend its serส‹ice life ฦ„eyond 2040.

The USAF has operated the C-5 since 1969. In that tiะผe, the airlifter supported US ะผilitary operations in all ะผajor conflicts including Vietnaะผ, Iraq, Yugoslaส‹ia, and Afghanistan, as well as allied support, such as Israel during the Yoะผ Kippur War and operations in the Gulf War. The Galaxy has also distriฦ„uted huะผanitarian aid, proส‹ided disaster relief, and supported the US space prograะผ.
