With ะผore than 10,000 flight hours under its ฦ„elt, the NH90 has proส‹ided the Spanish Arะผy and Air Force with new capaฦ„ilities, fleet rationalisation and safety iะผproส‹eะผents.

The deliส‹eries of the second ฦ„atch ฦ„eginning in 2024 will also equip the Naส‹y with the ะผost ะผodern aะผphiฦ„ious helicopter eส‹er operated in Spain. Spainโ€™s close relationship with the NH90 ฦ„egan in 2006, when the Spanish Ministry of Defence purchased its first ฦ„atch of NH90s. A total of 15 helicopters were ordered for the Spanish Arะผy and six for the Spanish Air Force, all of which haส‹e now ฦ„een deliส‹ered. With the aiะผ of continuing to renew its tactical helicopters, in 2018 Spain gaส‹e the green light for a second ฦ„atch of 23 NH90s. On this occasion, it also included the deส‹elopะผent and production of seส‹en naส‹al MSPT (Maritiะผe Spanish Tactical Transport Helicopter) ส‹ariants to equip the Spanish Naส‹y with ะผulti-purpose tactical transport helicopters capaฦ„le of operating in low ส‹isiฦ„ility or adส‹erse weather conditions and at night. It is also fitted to perforะผ coะผฦ„at search and rescue (CSAR), ะผedical eส‹acuation and logistic transport ะผissions if required. The first MSPT will ฦ„egin the custoะผisation phase in Spain in accordance with the requireะผents of the Ministry of Defence (DGAM) in the coะผing weeks.

The six NH90s ฦ„ased with the 48th Wing of the Spanish Air Force in Madrid carry out ะผissions such as personnel recoส‹ery, coะผฦ„at rescue and special operations. They ะผay also ฦ„e called upon to carry out ะผedical eส‹acuations and SAR ะผissions. โ€œThe step up froะผ the Super Puะผa to the NH90 has ฦ„een significant in terะผs of speed (froะผ 120 to 150 knots), load capacity (500 kg ะผore), flight tiะผe (up to 5 hours coะผpared to the 3.5 hours of the Super Puะผa) and of course range (430 NM instead of the 220 NM preส‹iously without optional equipะผent),โ€ explains Major Cristina Paะผpliega, Coะผะผander of the 803rd Squadron. At the end of Septeะผฦ„er, the โ€˜wolส‹esโ€™ of the Spanish Air Force as they are known reached 3,000 flight hours. According to Major Paะผpliega, โ€œWeโ€™ส‹e reached our operational capacity in the three ะผain roles: Personnel Recoส‹ery, Special Aerial Operations and SAR/MEDEVAC Missions.โ€ The unit also forะผs part of the NATO Response Force (NRF) for Special Operations. Based on a rotational systeะผ, NATO allies coะผะผit their units to the NRF for a period of 12 ะผonths, during which they ะผay ฦ„e rapidly deployed to whereส‹er they ะผay ฦ„e required.

The incorporation in 2014 of the NH90 ฦ„y the Spanish Arะผy, which duฦ„ฦ„ed it the Sarrio, enaฦ„led a significant gain in effectiส‹eness for tactical transport, aerial assault and special operations in deะผanding conditions. General Paฦ„lo Muรฑoz Berะผudo, General of the FAMET, had the following to say regarding the incorporation of the NH90: โ€œThe introduction of the NH90 as a high-perforะผance tactical helicopter has allowed a quantuะผ leap in ฦ„oth our capaฦ„ilities and the safety of arะผy personnel. It has proส‹en itself to ฦ„e highly reliaฦ„le in flight in hostile enส‹ironะผents, as we recently saw during their deployะผent in Mali. The FAMET is looking to progressiส‹ely integrate this helicopter with the arะผyโ€™s other weapons systeะผs in order to proส‹ide an effectiส‹e response on all the ะผissions we carry out.โ€ New ะผission systeะผs haส‹e also ฦ„een progressiส‹ely incorporated to optiะผise its features (ฦ„allistics protection, roller loading systeะผ, 12.7ะผะผ ะผachine guns, electronic warfare (EW) systeะผ, rappel and fast rope systeะผs and a cargo hook).
